Our Mission
Outer Harmony begins with Inner Balance
At Essence of Harmony Shiatsu, we embrace the body's incredible power to heal and restore itself, unlocking its natural harmony and balance.
Through the transformative practice of Shiatsu, we reconnect the body with its full range of motion and the profound sense of equilibrium it craves.
Our mission is to empower clients to discover inner balance, so they can embrace life with vitality and live in harmony with themselves and the world around them.
Who we are
My name is John (Jonathan) Murphy, LMT, AOBTA-CP.
Trained at Zen Shiatsu Chicago Massage Therapy School, I am also a Certified Practitioner with the American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia (AOBTA) and a member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). I am also certified in Reiki.
I chose to study Shiatsu because I deeply believe in Shiatsu's holistic approach to self-healing. My philosophy leans towards the Eastern teachings of harmony within oneself and the world around us. I see myself as a facilitator, helping the body and spirit heal itself by re-acquiring and maintaining the balance that is their natural state.
I love the peace found in the practice of Shiatsu and enjoy sharing its benefits with others. I believe in the body's ability to self-regulate, and as a therapist, I strive to be present and create a space for the intrinsic healing potential of my client to manifest.
My self-care routine involves Tai Chi, meditation, a Kriya yoga practice, and, of course, Shiatsu.
I enjoy reading, gaming, creative pursuits, and self-reflection. One of my greatest joys is spending time with my wife (a 20-year massage veteran) and our two cats.

Shiatsu is a Japanese therapeutic modality. It aims to balance the "Ki" (or "Qi" pronounced Chi), considered the vital life force energy, through the body by applying pressure on specific points along energy pathways called meridians. As a Shiatsu practitioner, I work to unblock any stagnation in the Ki flow and create space in the body to promote overall well-being. Shiatsu is based on over 4,000 years of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where imbalances in Ki are believed to lead to illness and pain.
In Shiatsu you will hear your therapist talk about the "Hara". According to TCM, the "Hara" (or Abdomen), is the center of the body and the body's vital energy. Your treatment will begin with a gentle palpation of the abdomen to get a sense of you as a whole person. This is an important treatment step. The Hara assessment helps us to understand what your body needs at this time to achieve your wellness goals.

Shiatsu stands out among bodywork therapies due to its unique approach and philosophy. Here's how it compares to other popular therapies:
Technique and Philosophy: Shiatsu, originating from Japan, is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine principles. It focuses on energy flow (Qi) and uses finger, palm, and elbow pressure on specific meridian points to restore balance. In contrast, therapies like Swedish massage emphasize relaxation through long, flowing strokes, while deep tissue massage targets deeper muscle layers to relieve chronic tension.
Pressure and Intensity: Shiatsu applies firm yet gentle pressure, often described as meditative and calming. Deep tissue massage, on the other hand, uses intense pressure to address muscle knots and chronic pain, which can sometimes be uncomfortable.
Session Style: Shiatsu is performed fully clothed, on a mat, futon, or table without oils. Other therapies, like Swedish or deep tissue massage, typically involve oil application and are performed on a massage table.
Benefits: Shiatsu is particularly effective for stress relief, improving circulation, and addressing energy imbalances. Deep tissue massage excels in treating injuries and chronic pain, while Swedish massage is ideal for relaxation.
Each therapy has its strengths, and the choice often depends on individual needs and preferences. Are you considering trying Shiatsu or comparing it for a specific purpose? I'd love to help you explore further!

Here's what a typical Shiatsu treatment might look like:
Consultation The therapist begins with a consultation to understand the client's needs, complaints, and health history.
Preparation: The client remains fully clothed and lies on a massage table. (so be sure to wear something comfortable and easy to move in. ) The therapist will perform a quick Hara assessment to help form a treatment based on your session goals
Techniques: The therapist uses their thumbs, palms, elbows, knees, and sometimes even feet to apply pressure to specific points on the body. They may also use stretching, holding, and leaning techniques to facilitate the flow of energy.
Focus Areas: Treatment can target general well-being or specific issues like muscle pain, poor sleep, stress, anxiety, or chronic conditions. The therapist tailors the treatment to the client's unique needs.
Relaxation: Throughout the session, the goal is deep relaxation and balancing the body's energy. It aims to activate the body's self-healing processes and restore natural balance.
While Shiatsu uses pressure points, it should never be "painful". The pressure can be adjusted but typically falls somewhere between a gentle relaxation massage and a therapeutic deep-tissue treatment.
The experience is deeply relaxing and can leave clients feeling rejuvenated and centered. It does this by activating the parasympathetic nervous system to help put the body into “Rest and Digest” mode, facilitating self-repair. It's not just about addressing physical complaints but also fostering a sense of mental and emotional well-being and balance.
